Place the section ends on a self-grip roller, roll along a clear path toward the head, secure it if that set requires clips, then unwind along the same path in reverse. Start with one visible front or crown section so you can learn how your exact roller grips and releases before attempting a full head. The sequence below uses the Beauty Works Bouncy Blowout set as a documented example; its dimensions and heat instructions do not apply to every self-grip roller.
Read the set before choosing a starting condition
The Beauty Works kit includes six 54 mm and six 64 mm rollers, sectioning clips, a tail comb and a round brush. Its described blowout method starts with blow-drying and later warms the rollers with a dryer. The manufacturer also describes a dry-hair option. That is permission for this named kit, not for every plastic or coated roller. A routine that uses a dryer is not wholly heatless just because the rollers have no plug. For another brand, check its own directions before using a dryer or choosing damp hair.
- Part a front piece or a crown section; park unused hair with a temporary clip.
- Lay the ends across the roller so they are visible and can roll flat.
- Roll toward the head along one path, keeping the section within the roller's usable width.
- Use the clip supplied or permitted by the named set if the instructions call for it.
The section should fit the roller. No drawing can establish a universal section width or tension.
Place a few rollers, then stop and check
- Start at the front. A face-framing section is easy to see. Separate it from the rest and check that its tips lie on the roller rather than fanning beyond the ends.
- Roll toward the root. Follow the product's illustrated direction. If the surface catches before the ends are positioned, gently release and restart rather than dragging the roller through the section.
- Secure as directed. In the Beauty Works kit, the maker instructs users to fasten placed rollers with the supplied sectioning clips. A self-grip surface does not mean that every set dispenses with clips.
- Add crown sections selectively. One or two crown rollers can be an illustrative style choice; a full head is optional. Leave enough room to see where each clip and roller will be removed.
- Follow the exact readiness instruction. The Beauty Works blow-dry method includes warming and cooling. Another set may have different timing or no dryer permission. Do not transfer a fixed duration or moisture percentage across brands.

| Stage | Check | If it goes wrong |
|---|---|---|
| Placement | Are the ends lying within the gripping surface? | Unwind and start with a more manageable section. |
| Fastening | Does the clip sit clear of the active section? | Reposition only if the maker permits that clip and placement. |
| Removal | Has the separate clip been opened first? | Support the section, then unwind; do not pull straight down. |
Remove without forcing a caught section
Keep the first practice attempt small enough to inspect from start to finish. One front piece and a crown section make it possible to see whether the ends lie on the roller surface and whether the section extends beyond its usable width. Place any holding clip where that kit directs; a clip meant only to keep unworked hair aside may not hold a roller. Before adding more rollers, check that you can reach each closure and that the first roller will have a clear reverse path out. These observations tell you whether to change the section layout before doing the rest of the head.
First release the clip if one is used. Hold the section near the roller and turn the roller gently in the reverse direction of the wrap, allowing the hair to leave the gripping surface a little at a time. If hair catches, stop and find the caught end. Pulling the roller through the length can worsen the tangle. A self-grip roller is a different handling problem from a round brush caught during a blow-dry; the two tools require different handling.
If you used a dryer first, let the product's own instructions determine when the rollers should be placed and released. Do not describe the combined routine as unheated simply because these rollers have no electrical element. After use, inspect the grip surface for caught loose hair and follow the maker's care directions before putting the rollers away. A surface that no longer holds a manageable section is a reason to recheck condition and fit, not to pull harder at the roots.
After one attempt, note whether the section was too wide, the ends escaped or the clip moved. Change one part of the setup next time. If removal itself is repeatedly inconvenient, compare a foam roller with a snap closure in the roller-format guide. The sectioning-clip guide explains temporary section control, and the blow-dry owner covers the dryer step.
