Flat Irons & Curling Tools

ghd Gold vs Platinum+: which standard iron fits?

Compare standard-width US ghd Gold and Platinum+ controls, plate labels, shutoff, warranty and what the evidence cannot rank.

Compare the exact US black listings

The ghd Gold US page describes dual-zone sensors, 1-inch plates, universal voltage, a 30-minute sleep mode, an 8.8-foot swivel cord, a protective plate guard and a two-year warranty. The Platinum+ US page describes predictive Ultra-Zone monitoring, 1-inch plates and a preset 365°F setting; its listing and US warranty table state three years. These are black standard models, not gift sets or other regions.

Choice path, not a performance score

Need a user-selectable temperature? Neither exact model supplies a dial → compare an adjustable owner. Need a standard fixed iron? Both qualify → compare warranty, included guard and current seller bundle. Already own one that works? Keep it.

What the different technology words cannot decide

ghd's Gold page describes two heat sensors and the Platinum+ page describes predictive monitoring. The two pages contain branded performance statements made under their own conditions. They do not establish how the two exact tools would compare on your hair in the same independent test. A sensor is not a selectable temperature control. Both sources describe preset styling rather than a personal setting decision; see fixed versus adjustable controls if that is your actual choice.

Gold's plate guard is useful only if its exact box includes it and the maker's storage directions fit your routine. Platinum+'s longer listed warranty may matter when choosing a new US unit from an authorised seller, subject to the actual terms and proof of purchase. A longer inactivity delay is not a reason to prefer one here because both are listed at 30 minutes. For travel, check the rating and plug of the physical unit despite Gold's universal-voltage statement; do not generalise another generation's support wording.

Before replacing either tool, separate a control problem from a handling problem. Write down the stage that is awkward: selecting a temperature, positioning the plate around a short section, routing the cord, or storing the cooled tool. Then identify the published feature that would change that stage. The shared preset and plate label do not, by themselves, resolve a request for adjustable heat or a different working width. If your concern is grip or balance, a specification sheet cannot settle it; check whether the seller permits the kind of inspection or return you would need before purchasing.

Documented purchase checks

No replacement case yet

Start with the task your current tool cannot perform. If there is no missing task, keep the tool you have.

This checklist organises your decision. It does not test products or predict results.

Who might choose each

Choose Gold when a fixed 1-inch format and its documented guard and two-year warranty fit the purchase, without paying for a technology name you do not need. Choose Platinum+ when its listed ownership terms and design are what you value; do not claim its sensor system will necessarily yield a better finish. If you want a shorter inactivity shutoff, compare the separate Chronos versus Platinum+ owner. If width is the real issue, use the plate-width guide. Check the exact US retail bundle at purchase because colour and package extras can change independently of the tool.
