ghd Chronos vs Chronos Max: choose a width

Compare standard and wide ghd Chronos flat irons using exact US and UK plate labels, shutoff and ownership differences.

Keep the regional labels intact

The US standard Chronos is titled a 1-inch plate flat iron; the US Chronos Max uses a 2-inch label. The UK standard page labels its plate 26 mm and the UK Max page labels 43 mm. A mathematical conversion of 2 inches is 50.8 mm, so these are not safely interchangeable as one precise measured dimension. Keep each region's wording with its source. Do not silently call 43 mm “2 inches” or assume a shared measurement convention.

Standard contact strip ▰ → short and mixed sections. Wider contact strip ▰▰ → broad sections with less close-section precision. Housing edges extend beyond either strip; the drawing does not represent exact dimensions.

Use the narrowest section as a test

Consider the front, a fringe, the nape and shorter layers as well as the longest section. A wide plate can present more surface to a broad length, but it can be harder to position where a small section starts. The Max page markets styling speed and a benefit for thick hair; those are manufacturer claims under stated conditions, not a guarantee for your routine. Someone with dense hair may instead choose more smaller sections with the standard tool. Someone who almost exclusively handles long broad sections may accept the Max's larger body. Neither width establishes a personal heat setting; both named pages use presets.

Do not confuse Chronos Max with the older ghd Max. Their shared “Max” term does not establish the same sensor design or current package. Also check the exact purchase market: the US standard listing states a three-year warranty while Max states two; the UK pages show the same distinction. Warranty terms still depend on the seller and original purchase. Both pages describe 10-minute sleep mode, so that feature does not decide this pair.

Check the box as well as the plate

A wide version may occupy more storage space and ask for a different angle around a face-framing section. Inspect the retail package for an included guard or case; the comparison table describes the tool models and does not establish identical extras in every colour or promotional bundle. If you already own a standard Chronos and only a small fraction of your routine uses broad sections, try better sectioning before assuming a second wider iron is necessary.

List the sections that would actually benefit from extra width and the sections where you still need close access. If both lists matter to the same routine, compare that compromise before buying. A wider label alone does not show that one tool can replace every job performed by the standard iron.

What to compare next

If you want a different control type, read fixed versus adjustable straighteners. If your shortlist is standard Chronos and Platinum+, use that exact comparison. The plate-width owner explains plate versus body dimensions. Keep a working standard iron when the only reason to buy Max is an unsupported promise of faster styling.
