If you routinely work in smaller sections and want the named seven-row layout, the D3 is a reasonable first comparison. If your longer working sections make the nine-row head easier to position, look at the D4. Those are handling preferences to check against the actual brush in hand; the listings do not provide measured head widths that would establish a universal section-size cutoff. Both pages describe wet curl definition, so that task alone does not force a D4 purchase.
For detangling, decide separately whether a styling brush is the tool you want. Denman also lists dedicated wet detanglers. Our curl-defining versus detangling brush guide explains the job difference. The general brush guide covers a minimal set of formats.
Denman's current D3 name includes “Curl Definer & Styler,” whereas the D4 page still uses “Original 9 Row Styler.” Older retailer labels and colour variants may use different wording. Confirm the model and row count on the listing you buy. Do not remove rows or change pads based on a social demonstration; check current instructions and part compatibility for that exact variant. The official pages above were checked on 11 October 2026 for the UK market. No hands-on comparison, speed, grip measurement or curl-result ranking is implied.

Start with the task your current tool cannot perform. If there is no missing task, keep the tool you have.
This checklist organises your decision. It does not test products or predict results.
Before buying either brush, decide whether the styling head can be placed at the root or on a damp section without collecting hair from neighbouring sections. Try this movement with the row count you already own or can examine in a shop; begin with a section small enough to see the pins and release path. If the head feels crowded, make the section narrower rather than assuming a new model will solve it. If a broader head feels easier to guide on long lengths, that supports your own preference for the D4 layout, but does not prove the D4 makes the style faster.
Grip and care can matter more than the two-row difference. The D3 listing explicitly describes removing the pad and pins for cleaning. The checked D4 page does not give the same step, so follow its exact care instructions before taking it apart. Denman's replacement-pad discovery page is not a compatibility guarantee for every D3 or D4 colour or generation. Confirm a part number with Denman if maintenance is the reason for purchase.
