Choose by the exact construction statement, plate width and controls rather than by a material winner. “Ceramic” and “titanium” may identify a coating, a plate material or a maker's branded technology. A short retailer title often does not tell you which. This guide helps you ask the construction question before moving to the separate control and width decisions.

Separate surface, plate and housing

A flat iron has a surface that touches the section, material beneath that surface, a heater or sensor assembly and an outer body. Product copy may name only one layer. The US ghd Unplugged page explicitly describes a fine ceramic coating on its plates. The US Chronos Max page describes ceramic floating plates and a ceramic heater. Those phrases are different and neither tells us every hidden layer of the other model. The BaBylissPRO BNT4172T family manual names Nano Titanium and gives exact model codes and controls; use that model code when checking what the claim covers.

Generic flat-iron layers: contact surface, plate body, heater, housing; explanatory text follows.
Generic layers, schematic only; no product cross-section

Hair section → contact surface or coating → plate body → heating/control assembly → outer housing. A maker may document only some layers. Do not infer solid metal from a surface label.

Claim on an exact page What it tells you What it does not prove
Fine ceramic coating, ghd Unplugged US The maker identifies a contact coating. That the whole plate is solid ceramic.
Ceramic floating plates, Chronos Max US Plate description and movement feature. That the housing or every internal part is ceramic.
Nano Titanium, BNT4172T manual Branded construction description for named codes. A universal speed, finish or hair-type advantage.

Make the purchase choice from usable differences

If your issue is a limited number of settings, compare fixed and selectable controls. If a short section escapes the plates, compare plate and housing geometry. If an existing iron snags, inspect condition and cleaning directions before assuming a different material fixes it. A coating name cannot substitute for plate alignment, control access or permitted use.

A shopper who prefers a compact cordless tool might examine the ghd Unplugged even though its ceramic coating tells little about comparative results. Someone needing named selectable positions might examine the BaBylissPRO model. Someone handling broad sections might inspect the Chronos Max width. Those are documented format choices, not a ceramic-versus-titanium test. Do not infer faster heating, less damage or a universal advantage for fine or dense hair from these labels.

Read an ambiguous listing

Copy the exact code from the box. Find the manufacturer's product page or manual for that code, then write down what part is named, whether it is a coating, what care is allowed, the width and the control positions. If the construction layer is unclear, record it as unknown. A model-family page may show multiple widths or editions; do not transfer one model's material or warranty to another. Prefer a short list whose decisive features are actually documented, and keep a functioning iron if a new label does not solve a practical problem.
