| What the exact instructions allow | Use this route | Do not assume |
|---|---|---|
| Spot cleaning | Spot clean only the affected area using the permitted cleaner and method | The whole ring can be soaked. |
| Hand washing | Follow the item’s water, detergent and drying directions | Every fabric with a similar sheen permits the same wash. |
| Machine washing | Follow the stated cycle and any protection requirements | Permission for a pillowcase applies to a scrunchie. |
| No clear instructions | Ask the maker before a wet clean; remove only loose hair without forcing the seams | A generic silk or satin recipe is suitable. |
A product-specific example: Slip
Slip’s care page gives its scrunchies a spot-cleaning instruction using a gentle pH-neutral liquid detergent. The same page has separate care sections for other products. Do not carry pillowcase washing permissions across to the scrunchies.
This distinction matters even when the outer fabric appears similar. Read the section for the product you own, not the first cleaning paragraph on a brand’s website.
If the item permits spot cleaning
- Remove loose hair without stretching the ring or opening the seam.
- Support the affected fabric so the elastic is not held under tension while you work.
- Apply only the cleaner and method permitted for that exact scrunchie. Work locally rather than saturating the whole item by default.
- Follow the maker’s directions for removing any remaining cleaner. Do not invent a soak or rinse step when the instructions do not address it; ask the maker if the method is unclear.
- Let the cleaned area and folds dry using the permitted method before wearing or packing the scrunchie.
If the item permits a full wash
Keep the ring relaxed while handling it. Use the label’s detergent, water and cycle requirements, including any required laundry bag. For a permitted hand wash, move the fabric gently instead of scrubbing a stretched ring against a rough surface.
Complete the stated rinse and drying method. Do not wring the elastic, add a hot drying step or hang the scrunchie under tension to make it dry faster. Check the fabric inside the gathers as well as the outside before storage.
Cleaning will not restore worn elastic
After the item is dry, inspect the seam and check how the ring returns after gentle stretching during ordinary use. If the elastic no longer holds your normal arrangement, washing is not a reliable way to restore its original tension. Do not use boiling water or a heated appliance to try to shrink it back into shape.
Keep a functioning scrunchie for the job it does well. For a different hold or bulk preference, use hair elastics vs scrunchies rather than regarding cleaning as a reason to replace the whole set.
